Expand your ideas of musical composition and organization in this interactive class focusing on understanding musical techniques from the Second Viennese School. The first class begins with a history of post-tonal music and an overview of current analytical techniques. We will also discuss general listening techniques in addition to an in-depth analysis of John Tavener’s The Lamb. In the second class, we will learn how to build a musical matrix and use it to understand Anton Webern’s Variations Op. 27 Mvt. 2. We will conclude the second class by composing a twelve-tone row and participants will have the opportunity to hear their compositions performed on real instruments.

  • No musical experience is required.
