The Violin: History, Sound and Craftmanship
Class | Registration opens Tuesday, February 4, 2025 10:00 AM
Explore the fascinating evolution of the violin, from its ancient stringed ancestors to the iconic instrument we know today, taught by Tom King and Diane Halliburton, both of whom have a long past working with violins. In this course they will cover the history of the violin, examining the stringed instruments that preceded it and the development of its design, which has remained virtually unchanged for over 500 years. We’ll also dive into the evolution of the violin bow, a key component that has continuously transformed over the past millennium.
Learn how violinists create the sounds we love, exploring the interaction between the bow, arms, hands, and fingers. We’ll uncover surprising details about how the bow produces sound and what goes into mastering the violin’s unique tones. Finally, discover the craftsmanship behind the violin. We’ll explore the step-by-step process of violin making, including live demonstrations of key techniques. Perfect for musicians, history buffs, and anyone curious about the artistry behind this timeless instrument.
