Huck and Jim In 2024

Study Group (2-3 session | Registration opens Tuesday, February 4, 2025 10:00 AM

This is a discussion course about the bestselling novel, James, by Percival Everett which was published a year ago. The narrator of the novel is Jim, or James, the runaway enslaved adult who accompanies Huckleberry Finn on his adventures down the Mississippi River. James, a grown man, brings a very different perspective to the events of the novel than does fourteen-yearold Huck, who is oblivious to the man’s danger and suffering. The novel is both an homage to Twain’s greatness and a critique of his limitations. Please read Huckleberry Finn before starting this class and, if your schedule permits, enroll for the earlier course about Twain’s novel. Dr. Linda Leavell, a retired professor of American literature, has taught Huckleberry Finn many times.

Please bring with you to class a paper copy of James and read the first half before the first class meeting.

  • This class will meet in person at the OLLI offices, located at 481 S. Shiloh Drive, Fayetteville, AR 72704. Please read your class reminder email for the exact room location.

Class changes occasionally happen, please watch for (and read) announcements or emails from OLLI regarding your class.
