During the Chinese Strike Hard policy towards Tibet, in the early 1990s foreign admittance was restricted and was only allowed with an approved guide and permit. Tourists at that time were limited to the low 1,000s. In 1994 my wife and I got the necessary permits, a guide, and driver leaving from Kathmandu for an eight-day adventure of a lifetime. Surviving rutted roads, two flat tires, and altitudes over 17,000 feet. We were literally “high” on life!
