103 Art at Grace Lutheran Church

Art that expresses faith, as well as beauty, has been an important part of Grace Lutheran Church’s history. The church has sponsored art shows that attracted recognized artists in the community. Currently, Grace sponsors art shows for Woodland Elementary School students. Church members have crafted works of art and given them to the Church. These include a tapestry, cross, stained glass, banners, pottery, and other items. These works of art will be on display in a church tour for the ORICL class.

Ruth J. Smiley
Ruth Johnson Smiley earned a PhD in natural resource economics from the University of Tennessee. After retiring from a career in research and teaching, she co-edited the book, “Tennessee Women of Vision and Courage", and wrote her memoir, “Becoming Independent”. At Grace Lutheran Church, she organized a flower guild whose members create altar flower arrangements and sponsor an annual flower festival. Ruth now serves on the Church Council.
