While there's little dispute that Willie was the GOAT of Elizabethan playwrights, he had some formidable competition. This Zoom class is scheduled for 12 sessions of the winter/spring 2026 term to allow for an initial overview of theater in Elizabethan England and how it integrates with the individual play, "Dr. Faustus" by Christopher Marlowe. Marlowe was one of Shakespeare’s more familiar rivals – and an occasional collaborator.  The text of the play, as presented on the Folger Shakespeare Library site, will be provided to class members.  We will read “Dr. Faustus” orally, in round-robin fashion.

Elane Streets

Elane Streets' education allowed little time for the arts, so she is working to fill in some of the holes in her retirement. As a life-long learner, she will organize the class and be learning along with all of you - and learning from you. As she tells her crossword class self-selected masochists, "We are all learners and teachers." It's an empowering model of instruction.
