152 A Brief History of School Mathematics in America

The math curriculum in the United States has shifted in emphasis based on historical events, the influence of people, and many other factors. We will explore that history and the major influences from 1890 to the present. We will also do some math from each era, including math for the elite, the beginning of compulsory school, world wars, the new math (for the space race), back to the basics, the new-new math, and problem solving for all.
Mark Taylor
Dr. P. Mark Taylor has been teaching mathematics to future mathematics teachers for over 35 years. He earned his BA and MA in mathematics. He earned his PhD in mathematics education. He began his career as a high school mathematics teacher and then moved on to teaching mathematics at the college level. He has been teaching at the college level for thirty years including college mathematics courses as well as education courses at the bachelor's, master’s and doctoral levels.
