452 Shakespeare's Rivals
Literature/Film Studies | Available (Membership Required)
Although the original concept for this class series was to read plays by several of Shakespeare’s contemporaries, by coincidence the Shakespeare Out Loud class read “The Tempest” during the winter/spring term, a play reckoned to be influenced by Marlowe’s “Dr. Faustus,” our current read. Since Shakespeare Out Loud will be reading “The Merchant of Venice” in the summer term, we thought it would be interesting to again parallel read the Marlowe play, “The Jew of Malta”, reckoned to have influenced Shakespeare’s play. The text of the play, from the Folgers Shakespeare Library site, will be provided to class members via ZOOM. We will read orally, in round-robin fashion.
Elane Streets
Elane Streets' education allowed little time for the arts, so she is working to fill in some of the holes in her retirement. As a life-long learner, she will organize the class and be learning along with all of you - and learning from you. As she tells her crossword class self-selected masochists, "We are all learners and teachers." It's an empowering model of instruction.
