This class will be a two-part lecture on ferns. The first part covers fern biology and includes the history and diversity of ferns, where ferns are found, and how they reproduce. The second part covers growing ferns in east Tennessee and includes site selection, soil preparation, garden design, and fern establishment and care.


Janet Cushman

Janet Cushman is an ecologist retired from the ORNL Environmental Sciences Division whose hobbies include growing ferns from spores. Marian Phillips is a life-long educator, retired, and an avid and experienced fern gardener. Both are Knox County Master Gardeners (KCMG) and originally prepared and presented this talk for the KCMG Speakers Bureau. Janet will present first with the biology of ferns; Marian will follow with fern gardens and gardening with ferns in the area.
