556 Introduction to International Folk Dance

Hobbies & How-to | Available (Membership Required)

In this introductory folkdance class, we will hold hands in a circle or line and follow easy steps to ethnic music. Paul Taylor will teach each dance before we try it with music and will call out the steps as we dance. We will dance to songs from Bulgaria, France, Hungary, Sweden, and other countries. Each week we will review dances from earlier weeks and begin new dances; we will briefly discuss the country of origin and the meaning behind each dance: wedding, recruiting, love, or humorous story.

We will meet at the Claxton Community Center, 1071 Edgemoor Road, Clinton. More detailed directions can be found at: www.oakridgefolkdancers.org. The wood floor at the Community Center is excellent for dancing. Participants do not need prior dance experience or a partner. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Paul Taylor

Paul Taylor has been folk dancing for over fifty years and has been leading the Oak Ridge Folk Dancers for over forty years. Paul's gentle teaching style allows everyone to be comfortable learning new dance steps. The Oak Ridge Folk Dancers club started in 1943, when Roger Knox taught early Oak Ridgers dance steps to music on his '78 records.
