103 Early Music Experience

This class will be an overview of early Western music of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. We will discuss the development and styles from dance/folk music to sacred/court music of each period. There will be demonstrations of period instruments to include various sizes of recorders, the vielle, harp, hurdy gurdy, etc. An early music ensemble of around eight musicians will perform examples from each period using mixed instrumentation and vocal selections. The class will be provided with copies of vocal works and given the opportunity to join in singing a period song or two.
