301 Holiday Haunts: Legends and Lore of Yuletide Monsters

For some, the spooky season stretches far beyond Halloween. Looking to historic records and tales of “The Old Ways” reveals a stunning reversal in how we once celebrated autumn, winter, and the creatures of the seasons. This course presented by Emily Curtis, will explore long ago monsters and mid-winter lore of the Icelandic Yule Cart, the Alpine Krampus, La Befana of Italy, the German Perchten, and many of their mischievous friends.
Emily Curtis
Emily Curtis is the Outreach Specialist at Oak Ridge Public Library. As a member of the Community Services Department, she coordinates the volunteer program, runs the library book club, hosts educational programming, and organizes the annual Adult Summer Reading Program. Emily has a background in Folklore Studies with a research scope of calendar customs, folk belief, and foodways. Her previous library lectures include “Once Upon a Time: The Study of Folklore & Fairytales” and “Signs of Spring: Symbols and Vernal Traditions Around the World.”
