304 ORICL Tour of the Oak Ridge History Museum

ORICL participants will meet at the Oak Ridge History Museum. Don Hunnicutt and Jake Alexander will show an eight-minute video providing an overview of the unique history of Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project (1942-1945). Groups of five will be given short, guided tours of the museum by ORHPA tour guides. After that, students may ask questions and roam around the museum on their own.

Since 2024, Jake Alexander has served as a tour guide at the Oak Ridge History Museum. This involvement has allowed him to learn about many details of the World War II Manhattan Project activities. He is retired from 38 years of technical and management support to the U.S. Departments of Energy, Defense, Transportation, and Health and Human Services; and numerous state agencies and commercial entities. During his active years he was certified as a professional engineer (PE), a hazardous materials manager (CHMM), and an NQA-1/ISO 9001 quality assurance auditor. A graduate of the University of Tennessee engineering school, he earned master’s degrees in environmental engineering and public administration at New York University and completed extensive study of radiation health physics at the University of Tennessee’s liberal arts graduate school.
Don Hunnicutt is a native Oak Ridger born in 1944. His mother, Beatrice Hunnicutt was a stay-at-home mother and his father, Edwin Hunnicutt, was in the Guard department at Y-12. Don graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1962 and then attended Tennessee Tech University and Fulton Vocational School. In 1968 he began a 34-year career at Y-12, retiring in 2005. Don is a member of the Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association. He serves on the board and volunteers at the Oak Ridge History Museum as a docent and city tour guide.
