This class involves a discussion of Oak Ridge history in a question-and-answer format using visual images of historic photographs and documentary films. Emphasis will be placed on the early history of Oak Ridge but will include more recent history. We will discuss the Manhattan Project National Historical Park and possible future science and heritage tourism efforts. Guest speakers will present information about their areas of expertise.
Ray Smith
Ray Smith has been the Oak Ridge City Historian since 2015; Tennessee historical commissioner for east Tennessee since 2017; cohost for Hidden History: Stories of the Secret City; newspaper columnist for The Oak Ridger and Morgan County Today’s Historically Speaking weekly column. He has been a documentary film producer; photographer; authored “Critical Connections,” and has been an ORICL instructor for several years.
