This course considers interpretations and cultural impact of the biblical prophets. We will focus on the Books of the Prophets included in the Hebrew Bible. These texts, shared by Judaism and Christianity, are among the most influential religious books in western society.

Learn about their authorship, history, and the varied meanings Christians and Jews have found in them over time. How have different translations affected their interpretation? How are they viewed in the modern world within different denominations of Christianity and different branches of Judaism? How do the prophets in these books compare to individuals identified as prophets elsewhere in the Bible, like Moses and Abraham? What did it mean to be a prophet in biblical times?
