556 What Makes Food Memorable? Exploring Memory, Flavor, Culture, and Connections Through Food

Hobbies & How-to | Registration opens 8/4/26 9:00 AM EDT

Why do some meals stay with us long after the last bite? Why can smell of a certain dish instantly transport us to another place, another time, or a cherished memory? Food is much more than nourishment. It is memory, culture, tradition, and connection.

Explore what makes food truly memorable beyond recipes and ingredients. Through discussion, tasting experiences, storytelling, and hands-on activities, participants will discover how flavor, culture, hospitality, and human connection shape meaningful dining experiences.

John & Jennifer Marx

John and Jennifer Marx, a U.S. military veteran and his family, own Barriga Llena, a restaurant fueled by discipline, heart, and a love of service. Our founder brings 25 years of leadership experience, a lifelong passion for food, and a deep commitment to community. In Spanish, Barriga Llena means “full belly” and represents more than just food. It reflects our belief that great food can bring people together through connection, culture, and community - one plate at a time.

As a military family, every place we’ve lived has influenced our food. Rather than focusing on a single cuisine, Barriga Llena offers a globally inspired menu drawing from Colombian, American, Latin, Mediterranean, Asian, Southern, and Texas BBQ traditions.
